For 500 years, the palace was Berlin’s most distinctive building on the Spree island, sitting at the centre of the historic tree-lined boulevard up to Brandenburg Gate. In 1945, the building burnt to the ground following bomb attacks, with the ruins being demolished in 1950 to make way for a parade ground. Reconstruction of the building has been ongoing since 2013. With its historic façade, the new building is a close imitation of the original on three of its sides. The building is scheduled to reopen in 2021.

- Short description
- The new design for the historic façade was intended to replicate the appearance of the building as it stood in the 19th century. This also included 386 box-type windows, some with a height of over 6 metres, as well as 9 portal façades including 18 wooden portal doors. The wooden elements were given a white coating that would offer long-term protection against UV rays and fungal attack.
