Jing’an is one of ten inner districts of the Chinese city of Shanghai.
The World Expo 2010 took place in Shanghai under the theme “Better City – Better Life”. Following the exhibition, the authorities of Jing’an district organised China’s first state-sponsored public international sculpture project.
The Belgian concept artist Arne Quinze designed a 55-tonne wooden sculpture for the occasion, dubbing it “Red Beacon”. The work of art is 80 metres long, 30 metres wide and 11 metres high.
