War Office Silos Restored in Cambridge
These concrete silos were originally constructed in 1940 for the War Office as part of their Strategic Food Storage Programme. They were taken over by S&B Herba Foods in 1986.
After 60 years, carbonation had finally reached the level of the steel with cracks and spalling occurring in many areas. Folcrete Restoration Services were contacted to prepare a full survey, and then to refurbish the silos for a fixed price. The first operation was to clean and prepare the concrete, then to break out and remove the damaged concrete and clean the corroding steel. This was primed and the damaged areas reinstated with Remmers systems. Finally the concrete surfaces were sealed and protected with Remmers Concrete Acrylic coating. This project is now nearing completion, on schedule and on budget.
