Refurbishment Projects Sedbergh School
Stone restoration specialists Quadriga have recently completed another major project, using Remmers’ systems, at the historic stone built Sedbergh School, parts of which date from the 16th century.
This project was to clean, renovate and restore the War Memorial Cloisters that had been traditionally built in stone within the school grounds in 1924. The restoration was completed in only 25 weeks and at a value of approximately £1 million.
The façades were mechanically and chemically cleaned, then treated to remove algae and lichen growth using Remmers’ solutions. Waterproofing was reinstated, the walls re-pointed and the stonework repaired with Remmers’ colour matched systems. This included all of the monuments, perimeter walls and the large coping stones on top of the parapet walls, which were carefully removed, replaced and restored after the necessary structural, waterproofing and detailing works.
Land at the rear of the Cloister walls was cleared and excavated to install a new land drainage system, together with new waterproofing to the base of the walls. This was achieved with Remmers’ waterproof cementitious renders, membranes and protective boards, before backfilling.
Hydraulic lime mortars were used to rebuild the walls, including their fine joints and overhanging details. Internally the memorial plaques to the pupils and staff who had lost their lives in war, were refurbished by carefully cleaning and drying out, then re-carving, inlaying and sealing to restore and preserve their original fine appearance.
