Heron House,
WC1 Structural Renovation with Remmers

Short Story:
Heron House at 322 Holborn WC1 is a 1970’s office building in the centre of London, that was being refurbished and upgraded.

During the works HKW Partnership engineers noticed that behind the old decorative façade and suspended ceilings, carbonation had progressed as deep as the steel, particularly where the concrete cover was low.

The potential for corrosion with subsequent loss of integrity and fire protection, led to Structural Renovations Limited being contracted to repair the problem.

The damaged concrete was removed, any exposed steel was cleaned and protected, followed by reinstatement of the concrete to thickness and profile with Remmers fast curing easy to use Betofix® RM mortar.

Full Story:
Heron House is a prestige 1970’s Commercial Office Building in the centre of Holborn, London WC1 that was being refurbished and upgraded.

The lower levels had been built with a concrete ‘rib’ beam and void form ‘pot’ floor which was fully exposed again during the refurbishment. The engineers from HKW Partnership noticed that in the relatively constant environment behind the old decorative façade and suspended ceilings, carbonation had progressed into the supporting concrete beams to the depth of the reinforcement, particularly where the concrete cover was low.

This potential for future corrosion meant that Structural Renovations Limited were contracted to repair the problem areas. This required them to remove the damaged concrete, clean any corroding steel and reinstate the concrete to the correct thickness and profile with Remmers Betofix® RM mortar. This advanced cementitious repair mortar is designed to be easy to use, and fast curing, which allows it to be applied overhead and built up overhead in several layers within a short period of time.
