BREAKFAST CEREAL FACTORY Repaired with Remmers
The major breakfast cereal production facility in Corby was built in the early 1950’s with an insitu reinforced concrete structural frame and a barrel vaulted concrete roof, plus a façade of precast panels and glazing.
As concrete damage had become visible, Folcrete Restoration Services were contacted to carry out a full condition survey and were then awarded a full refurbishment project.
Honeycombing from inadequate original compaction had eventually allowed water ingress to the steel and the main vertical reinforcement had begun to corrode.
The damage was repaired using Remmers systems and overall the concrete surfaces were sealed and protected with Remmers Concrete Acrylic coating.
Full Story:
The major breakfast cereal production facility known as ‘Corby One’ has had its external concrete fabric repaired and protected by Folcrete Restoration Services using Remmers complete concrete repair and protection system.
The plant was originally built in the early 1950’s with an insitu reinforced concrete structural frame and a barrel vaulted concrete roof, with a mixed façade of precast exposed aggregate panels and glazing - an innovative space saving manufacturing facility design for its time.
Folcrete carried out a full condition survey and were then awarded the refurbishment project as main contractor.
The most serious problems had arisen in the columns where a combination of low cover, and honeycombing from inadequate compaction in the original construction, had allowed water ingress and the main vertical reinforcement had begun to corrode. This created a vicious circle of cracking, spalling concrete and further water ingress.
The solution proposed by Folcrete, using their own powered access cradles, involved high pressure water jetting to clean all of the concrete surfaces, mechanical breakout of the damaged areas and blastcleaning of any exposed steel reinforcement to beyond its corroding length.
The damage was repaired using Remmers advanced mortars including Betofix RM for the overhead repairs to the edges and details of the roof slab.
Overall the concrete surfaces were then sealed and protected by the application of Remmers Concrete Acrylic anti carbonation coating, including a clear glaze grade on the exposed aggregate surfaces.
