Full Story:
The prominent and historic 1930’s ‘Art Deco’ concrete apartment building Lichfield Court, near Richmond station, has been restored to its original significance by specialist contractors Folcrete Restoration Services Ltd.

The six and seven storey blocks, designed around a large open courtyard by Architects Bertram Carter & LL Sloot, and built by Bovis Ltd, contain 170 private flats from studios to three bedroom apartments and when originally released, they were available at annual rents of just £70-160 per annum!

The £1.2m refurbishment of the external façades by Folcrete, had become necessary after more than 60 years of weathering and the effects of atmospheric pollution on the concrete structure – a testimony in fact to the good quality of the original construction, as many subsequent buildings from the 1950’s to the 1990’s have shown far worse deterioration.

In the 60 years concrete carbonation had finally progressed to the level of the embedded reinforcement, leading to concrete cracking and spalling over the corroding steel.

Using their in-house powered access cradles over a 75 week contract period, to minimise noise and disruption to residents, Folcrete have fully restored and waterproofed all 6,000m² of concrete surfaces on the façades with Remmers Concrete Restoration System including decorative protection of all of the external surfaces to ensure their longevity, with Remmers Concrete Acrylic anti-carbonation coating.
