Desalination - EU research results on poultice systems

An international colloquium to be held at the Cologne Institute of Conservation Science, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, 28 - 29 September 2009.

AIMS

This colloquium presents the fi ndings of »Desalination«, a three year EU research project, which began in 2006 with the aim of developing a straightforward methodology for optimising the selection and assessing the performance of desalination poultice systems used in conservation. The intention is to provide a forum for discussing the latest research findings, and to show how this knowledge can feed back into the practical arena to aid conservators working within stone, architectural and wall paintings conservation.

BACKGROUND

Most methods of treating salt damage problems are aimed at reducing the salt content of the aff ected object. The use of poultice systems is well established in conservation, however, due to the complex nature of salt problems within historic structures the outcome of such interventions can be variable. In particular, the efficiency of salt extraction, and the location of salts remaining within the object after treatment is diffi cult to predict. The Desalination project is an international co-operation between 9 European partners from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and France, together with the Getty Conservation Institute, USA. The multidisciplinary team comprises conservation practitioners, managers, scientists and architects, each with specialist expertise in salt deterioration problems. The project partnership provided a unique opportunity to improve our current understanding of salt and moisture transport processes in porous media, and to address practical questions of relevance to the conservator.
